Recommendation 8 "How to"

Fat has been a topic of conversation for twenty some years now. Many of us associate fat with heart disease. Too much saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet are associated with increased blood cholesterol levels and greater risk for heart disease. It is important to realize that moderation in our eating is a good approach for several reasons. Please consider the following:

Tips You Can Use

  • Use oils and fats sparingly
  • When used as added fat, vegetable oils should be preferred over animal fats
  • Vegetable oils should be predominantly monounsaturated (canola, peanut, olive oils) to maintain cardiovascular health
  • Choose foods with hydrogenated oils sparingly (margarines, shortenings, baked products)
  • Use the Nutrition Facts Label to help you choose foods lower in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol
Choose low fat milk products: skim and 1% milkfat, cottage cheese, part-skim Ricotta, and part-skim Mozzarella most times

Choose lean meats, fish, poultry, beans, lentils, peas and low fat milk products as sources of protein

Choose ground beef with 10-15% fat content
