6 "How
to"
|
What is one drink and
what are the calories in one drink?
- 12 oz beer = 150 calories
- 12 oz lite beer = 110 cals
- 1 1/2 oz liquor = 90 cals
add 75 cals for 6 oz of carbonated
drink mix

Remember:
- Drinking displaces other foods from your plate.
So the more alcohol you drink, the fewer
nutrients you consume.
- Alcohol is a drug of addiction.
- There is no physiological role for alcohol in the
body. That is, alcohol is not like protein which
builds muscle, or like vitamin E which protects
tissues from oxidation.
- Persistent heavy drinking may damage the liver,
digestive tract, central nervous system and
cardiovascular system.
- Alcohol interferes with the work of some
nutrients.
- Alcoholic drinks may contain carcinogenic
contaminants.
- The risk of cancer is greatly increased if
drinkers also smoke.
- If you have had trouble in the past controlling
drinking, even one drink may be one too many.
|
And what about a daily drink to reduce the risk of coronary
heart disease?
- The consumption of alcohol at low levels is thought to
reduce the risk of heart disease. Keep in mind that the
World Health Organization concluded in 1997 that 'the
reduced risk for coronary heart disease has been found at
the level of one drink every second day and there is
little additional reduction of risk beyond consumption
levels of about one drink a day.'
- If you are taking medication, check with your pharmacist,
doctor or other health care provider. There could be a
harmful interaction between drinking alcohol (even if it
is one drink) and taking certain medications.
