The Role of the FDA

The FDA has decided it does not need new regulatory powers to oversee the safety of foods produced using genetic engineering. In a case where a genetically transformed food plant produces a new substance, that new substance will undergo evaluation for safety as a new food additive. See: FDA Education/Compliance Program: 1995. Emerging Technologies -- Biotechnology. The FDA has outlined Consultation Procedures for developers of genetically engineered food products.
